What’s Your Attitude?

Friday, May 15th, 2009

The kind of life you are creating for yourself, whether or not it is positive or negative, depends very much upon your attitude.

*

A positive attitude is the great differentiator between those that achieve and get what they want from life and those that don’t.

*

The choice to have a positive attitude, no matter what situation you find yourself in, will make all the difference in the world.

*

It is easy to have a positive attitude when things are going the way you want them to go. It is when things are not going so smoothly, when there is adversity in your life, that a positive attitude makes the greatest difference. A positive attitude in times of adversity has the power to inspire others, to move mountains, and to change the course of history.

*

People who are positive through difficult times think differently than those that get down during hard times. They see the light at the end of tunnel and focus their attention on that light.

*

My positive attitude, even when I have been in a negative situation, has allowed me to reach for something more, something of value and greater meaning. It has enabled me to be open to new ideas and to be creative in my response to the challenges that have been presented to me.

*

When you know a truth, live it! The truth can set you free. Use the truth to make a difference in the world. Focus on what is possible. Move toward what you are called to do. Follow your instincts and intuition, for this is where the truth hides.

*

It is an individual and unique experience that you are living. When you make searching for the truth a priority you come closer to living your purpose in life.

Let me know what you think.

Giving Back

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

Do you want to know one of the most powerful ways to increase your influence and wealth?

Do you want to know a way to improve your quality of life and to grow your network of friends and resources?

Sure you do, and guess what, you have the ability to do with ease. It is not even a new idea and it has been working for thousands of years with those who are willing to take the time.

It is through giving back that we have the ability to gain the most from our lives. Yep, giving back to our community, to our family, to our friends, and even to nature is when we can gain the most.

“You give but little when you give of your possessions.  It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

Here is an example of how it works. I have a skill of visually facilitating people and organizations to new levels of thinking and action. Many people need this type of talent to support them in moving to the next level of growth. As a way to give back I shared my skills at no cost to a non-profit organization to help them focus their energy and talents. They were please with the outcome which was just what they were looking for.

The positive feedback that I received confirmed that the work that I did with them contributed to improvement. Sounds good so far eh? But wait there is more. It is not until a year later that I got a call one of the board members that had been looking for the right opportunity to plug me into a corporate session she was in charge of. Just like that what I gave was returned not only money, but also in tremendous trust that I was the right person for the job. Hired I am and the relationship continues on and on.

“Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.” William James

Very powerful indeed, yet why is that so many of us out there are only willing to give when we know for sure we are going to get something back, or worse yet, we only are going to take and not give anything away?

Giving back has the power to help you reach your dreams. Do you want to be an environmentalist who works with saving dolphins? Find out who needs your help and sign up to give away your skills, even if those skills mean holding the radar that monitors dolphin movement.

Do you want to start a business, but don’t know where to start? Find a company that is like the one you would like to start and see if you can give away your talents and skills part time to get your foot in the door. See if you really like what you think you want to do and then learn what it takes to do what you want to do.

Do you want to get more integrated into your community? Join a board or two that focuses their activities on something you are passionate about. The next thing you know you are plugged in to your community and new opportunities will show themselves along the way.

Now there is a caveat in all of this. You have to show up when you give “it” away. You can’t just sit down, walk around, and not contribute something of value. You must be pro-active and positive. Giving not only of your time to show up to board meetings, but also getting things done when the board does not meet makes it all come together.

This is one of the secrets people with happy, connected, and influential lives have and now you can have this as part of a life of giving too. And guess what? It doesn’t cost you anything but your time.

You say you don’t have any time that you are already stretched to the limit? There is a saying out there that I have found to be true, “If you want to get something done give it to a busy person.” Why do you think that is? Perhaps it is because busy people have learned how to maximize their time and are able to pull resources to make things happen in a highly effective way.

“I am only one, but I am one.  I cannot do everything, but I can do something.  And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.” Edward Everett Hale

One way to find more time is to reduce or remove the time you watch television. Amazingly, the average person in America watches 4 hours of television a day. What that translates into is that in a 65-year life, the person watching 4 hours of television a day will have spent 9 years of their life glued to the boob-tube.

Think about how much you could do with those 9 years if you spent them giving back, contributing to your community, and reaching for your full potential. There is no time like the now to start.

Where ever you want to go in life you can get to if you are willing to work hard enough to get it. Giving back is a good place to start.

“The purpose of life is not to be happy – but to matter, to be productive, to be useful, to have it make some difference that you have lived at all.” Leo Rosten

Giving Away Your Love

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

You know, my favorite gift is the gift of love. How about you?

Love warms me. It makes me tingle all over, inspires me, causes me to blush, gives me confidence, comforts me, and inevitably brings my total attention to that exact moment of wonder.

“Love has no desire but to fulfill itself.  To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.  To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving.” Kahlil Gibran

Love is such a powerful force in our lives. Love is what we desire the most and in many cases is what we receive the least of.

It is not hard to understand why, as humans, giving and receiving love is not one of our major focuses. This is the deal, love does not cost us any monetary resources and yet has the power to give and receive more than all of Fort Knox worth of returns.

“Let your love be like the misty rains, coming softly, but flooding the river.”

Malagasy Proverb

What holds us back from giving and receiving love on a regular basis?

One of my favorite ways to express my love for those people in my life is through hugging. I know your thinking right now, oh great a hug, isn’t that a bit girly for a man?

Whenever I feel a strong unconditional kind of love for someone I just can’t help myself, I have to hug them. This has gotten me into way more uncomfortable situations than one can count. The thing is that it is a very natural way for me to express love for people in my life.

Over time the people that I have shared this unconditional love with start to feel the love and will actually wonder why I am not hugging them whenever I see them and don’t hug them. Got to love that.

The pace of our lives is such that we don’t allow ourselves the time to slow it down and feel the love, much less share it.

“A bell is no bell ’til you ring it,
A song is no song ’til you sing it,
And love in your heart
wasn’t put there to stay. Love isn’t love
’til you give it away.”

Oscar Hammerstein, The Sound of Music

Nothing could be more important in your live than to share your love and give it away. You can do it!

Have any of you read about people giving away “free hugs” to anyone walking down the street. Their idea is that everyone could use a little love and hey, it doesn’t cost anything. What a great example of people wanting to give people the power of love and to complete strangers. You don’t have to be so extreme share your love.

This Thanksgiving muster the energy and intention of giving away your love to those you care about. Nothing could be more important or rewarding.

“Love is, above all, the gift of oneself.” Jean Anouilh

Electing Out-of-the-Box Thinkers

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

When you think about out-of-the-box people, who do you think of? Richard Branson, Picasso, Salvador Dali, Chuck Barris, Frida Khalo, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington or, possibly Paul Revere.

People who think out-of-the-box see and open new possibilities. In many cases these are the leaders who challenge us and inspire us to think differently and rise up into action. It is hard to think of a more out-of-the-box bunch than America’s founding fathers. Let’s face it. They had to be to think they could take on England, the most powerful nation on earth in 1776. In our founding fathers’ day their out-of-the-box thinking revolved around a nation based upon liberty, justice, free speech, all men are created equal, the separation of church and state, the right to participate in the religion of your choice, the right to bear arms, and the ability to participate in deciding who represents you in our government. The idea of voting for who you want representing you is quite possibly one of our founding fathers greatest legacies.

Benjamin Franklin is one of the greatest examples of an out-of-the-box thinker I can think of. As an entrepreneur, author, inventor, publisher, philosopher, Casanova, and diplomat, Franklin was able to enroll France to support the founding fathers with much needed money and resources. This was no small task as no country wanted to get embroiled in the controversy of supporting an unrecognized band of out-of-the-box thinkers, fighting England, in an unchartered far away place.

Thomas Jefferson acted as architect of one of the most important vision and mission documents in the history of man, the Declaration of Independence.

George Washington risked it all to fight for freedom and liberty and then stepped up to the plate to become our newly born nation’s first President.

Their out-of-the-box thinking and risk taking has inspired and moved our nation for over 232 years. And much like England during the time of America’s birth, we became the most powerful nation on earth.

I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us, that the less we use our power the greater it will be.” Thomas Jefferson

I wonder what Ben Franklin would have to say about where we find our great nation at this point in history?

“Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” Benjamin Franklin

As we look out over the landscape of our world today, we find ourselves at a crossroads in history. America has an opportunity to lead the world and show what is possible by uniting and leading by example. America is not its President, its Senators, its Congressmen, or its special interest groups. America is its citizens. We the people are able to choose who we want representing us by going out and voting.

How can we regain the “out-of-the-box” thinking that inspired the birth of our nation? Now more than ever we need to reach down deep and pull out the best we can be to take on the challenges of today and tomorrow. Why is it that we need to be hit by lightening bolts to wake up and face reality? Then after being awakened, over time, we have a tendency to get complacent, forget, and go back to our old patterns of living.

We cannot afford to fall back into our old patterns. We need to support new thinking from both our major political parties and all of the candidates. We can support new thinking by understanding the issues, where our candidates stand, and letting our voices be heard by voting.

“For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions, even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise.” Benjamin Franklin

You have the power to influence the next chapter of our great country and the world by voting for the best candidate to represent all of us. It is critical that we understand all of the candidates’ merits, faults, strengths, weaknesses, and vision for our future. This understanding will enable you to make the best possible decision when you go to the polls to vote.

As part of Ben Franklin’s legacy he has left us a powerful tool to support our ability to make informed decisions, the Pro-Con Chart, a thinking and decision making tool that is as viable today as it was when he was using it over 200 years ago. In fact, this is the same exercise Kristen and I used when we were making our big decision to move, or not to move, to Grand Lake way back when. Ben liked to use a Pro-Con Chart when the decisions he had to make were some of the most important he was about to make.

Here is how it works. At the top of a piece of paper put the candidates name centered on 1/2 the page then draw a line under each name. From the center of the paper draw a line down just under the name so you have two equal spaces to your left and right. At the top of the left under the name and line put the word Pro. On the right side under the name and line put the word Con. Then write down all the Pro and Con concepts you can come up with on why you would vote or not vote for this candidate. Next to each Pro and Con concept place a number from 1 –10, “10” being the most important and “1” being the least. Take your time and be realistic about your number rating. After attaching a number to each concept, add up the numbers on each side and total. These thoughts and figures will help you better understand your deeper thinking.

Put your candidate and their opponent to the Ben Franklin Pro-Con test! See if you are making the best choice you can be making.

I think that Ben would be proud. See you at the polling booths on November 4th.

Let me know what you think.

Realizing Your Dreams

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Each and every moment in your life is extremely precious. Each moment represents unlimited potential for creating the life you have always dreamed of, the life you were meant to be living, the life that fulfills your purpose on this planet.

If you are one of the few people that has figured this out, congratulations. If you are among the many who continue to think that there is something more to life than just going through the motions, then now is the time to start working towards living your life’s purpose. What are you waiting for?

What is your dream? What is it that you most desire but don’t currently have in you life? What is it that you are meant to be doing with your life?

“Nothing happens unless first a dream.” Carl Sandberg

None of these are easy questions to answer, but once you ask them you will begin the process of opening the doors of perception and begin to naturally move towards reaching your full potential.

I know that for some of us it is just too hard to even start the process of thinking about how to achieve what it is that we dream of for our lives. It is just easier not to think about it. Finding the answers to these questions might mean that we have to change what we are currently doing, change who we live with , change our careers or even move to another location. These are just a few of the reasons why so many people settle and never take the powerful steps needed to reach for something more in their lives in order to discover what the purpose of their life really is.

“To change one’s life: Start immediately. Do it flamboyantly. No exceptions.” William James

Even if we want to change we can get stuck in a rut. Like a broken record we continue to do what we have always done because it’s more comfortable, like our favorite pair of old worn jeans. At some point you have to make the change and throw those jeans away or find a new use for them. You need to change elements of your life every once in a while otherwise you will start to get tired, worn out, and bored. This leads to complacency and a mental plaque that prevents you from seeing the opportunities around you. You are unique, you are special, you have a purpose in life and it is important to you and the world that you pursue your purpose in life and live it.

What are you waiting for?

You can start by writing down everything you have dreamed about what your life could be. Write down all that comes to you as fast as you can. Don’t think about how whacked out your dreams may be. Don’t stop and think, “This is just too much for anyone to think is real.” Don’t worry at all about what it is you are writing down. Just do it! You can do it!

“We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter’s evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; they nurse them thought bad day until they bring them to the sunshine and the light that always comes to those who sincerely hope that there dreams will come true.”Woodrow Wilson

After you have written down your dreams, even if just one, post them on the mirror in your bathroom. Look at them each morning. Think about what it would be like if your dreams became real. How would you feel?

The next step is to write down what you need to do to make your dreams real. Start taking these steps. It may take weeks. It may take months. It may take years. It may take a lifetime. It doesn’t matter because you are living your dreams and nothing could be more important.

“Allow yourself to dream and fantasize about your ideal life; what it would look like, and what it would feel like. Then do something everyday to make it a reality.” Brian Tracy

What are you waiting for?

In my life I work everyday to live my dreams and my life’s purpose. The more I work at this the easier it becomes. Really. I will say this. Your life will never be the same once you embark on this process because you will enter into the great unknown and the world will open up for you. You will start meeting people who are aligned with your dreams and will want to help you. You will start to experience new challenges that will stretch you, enabling you to grow. You will start going with the flow of life. You will start living your purpose. What could be more important?

If you desire to live your life with greater meaning and purpose there is no time like the present to start. You can do it!

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his own dreams and endeavors to live the life that he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” Henry David Thoreau

What are you waiting for?

Let me know what you think.

Breaking Out-of-Your-Box

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

More and more of us are being defined by the limiting parameters we set for ourselves, what is commonly know as “a box.” Our challenge as humans is to figure our how to “break-out-of-the-box” that supports creating the limitations in our lives, the box that holds us back as individuals, communities, and countries.

Breaking-out-of-the-box is about stretching your limits and facing those things that hold you back.

Our patterns of judgment–fear, not being good enough, and control–are only a few of the pieces that make up the box we create around ourselves.

If we sit back for a few seconds and think about the idea of a box, we might see that some of the greatest discoveries in history have been uncovered by individuals willing to take a risk and think outside-of-the-box.

To break-out-of-the-box we need to be open to change, to be willing to look at the boxes that we create for ourselves, and then be willing to face them head on. Once we face them we need to take action to move out-of-the box, which means doing what we have not wanted to do in the past.

Everyday is an opportunity to use your creativity, imagination, teamwork, positivity, logic, and passion which, when engaged, will enable you to increase your ability to live a life with more purpose and meaning.

Reclaiming your childhood vision is one of the best ways to start breaking out-of-the-box. In so many cases we have forgotten how to play, imagine, and even worse we have forgotten how to be ourselves.

Thinking with childlike vision is hard work and takes courage. In many cases it means you may have to sacrifice long held beliefs, paradigms, to gain new perspective.

Take the risk to step out on a limb and to be different than others and to challenge your thinking and your beliefs. This will enable you to “break-out-of-your-brainwashed box” into “out-of-the-box-thinking!”

Breaking-out-of-the-box takes practice, patience, constant attention, and a deep desire to be the best you can be. You can do it!

Let me know what you think.

Until next week, remember the only boxes that exist are the ones you create yourself.

The Game of Life

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

As children growing up, we all learn how to play with one another through games, all kinds of games. I can remember playing flashlight tag with the other kids in my cul-de-sac. Monopoly was the most popular game with my family on rainy days. Candy Land was another favorite and then there was The Game of Life. I can hear the wheel in the middle of game board spinning right now. Where it lands nobody knows. Growing the biggest family, securing the best career, buying the house on the hill, all while avoiding the pit falls of playing The Game of Life.

If only playing the real game of life was as easy as the board game. How do you play the game of life?

“Life’s not always fair. Sometimes you can get a splinter even sliding down a rainbow.” Cherralea Morgen

Growing up I was never taught how to play the game of life. In fact, I have rebelled against buying into this game and instead created my own rules. I have experienced this game as unhealthy and full of low integrity people serving themselves before others. By creating my own game on the sidelines of the larger game, a kind of ghost in the machine, I have been able to excel with an “out-of-the-box” way of life that has served me well. At least, that is what I have thought. I have been proud to be an example of someone who has not played the game and been able to succeed in life against all odds.

Looking back on my childhood I can see that everything I needed to learn about playing the game could have been learned from my time in the sandbox. We had to share the toys that were available to us. Collaboration was necessary for those in the sandbox to get along and create something. When a bully would take a toy or your sandwich you had to decide to fight or flee. The interactions that took place in the sandbox are a great place to reflect upon how to play the game. What happens between childhood and adulthood that we loose these lessons?

“As we struggle to make sense of things, life looks on in repose.” Author Unknown

As I have become more motivated and focused on sharing the power of What Box? and have been consciously living it, it has become clear that I not only have to start playing the game but embracing playing the game. This is a major challenge. How does one step into the box, yet remain out-of-the-box and keep their sanity? Sounds like one of those wise sage questions that have no answer doesn’t it?

How odd, that to support people, organizations, communities and corporations to think more out-of-the-box you have to step into the box and play the game. This is the way it is and to create a meaningful impact in people’s lives it is critical to become a champ at playing the game. I have been in awe and at the same time in contempt of people who can play the game with great ease.

How can we learn to play the game even better and still remain unique?

“Life is not a final. It’s daily pop quizzes.” Author Unknown

I don’t even know how to fully enter the game. Is there a starting point? Did I miss it and now am I in the middle somewhere on the game board? How do I catch up? What are the rules and who created them? Is there more than one game? Is there a get out of jail free card? Do I get to pass Go and collect $200?

I believe the challenge is to stay conscious of the fact that we are all playing a game, while staying true to our values and mission in life. It’s kind of like standing next to yourself watching and reminding yourself not to take it too seriously and have fun while playing. Aren’t games supposed to be fun?

Like so many things in life and written in What Box? it takes tremendous practice to achieve the desired results. I have a feeling this one is going to take the rest of my life to figure out. I guess we all have to figure it out for ourselves.

“To live remains an art which everyone must learn, and which no one can teach.” Havelock Ellis

Playing the game is part of life. We can embrace it or repel it. Which will you choose?

Let me know what you think.

Green Light Your Creativty

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

One’s ability to recognize and remove emotional, perceptual, and cultural blocks is a major step towards greater creativity along with breaking out-of-the-box. Once you start removing these obstacles you begin to establish a frame of mind that is more conducive to letting your creative thinking flow. This does not mean that you can simply flip a mental switch and suddenly become creative. Like so many things written in What Box? it takes practice.

The blocks that hold you back have been created over a lifetime. Like you, I continue to be challenged by my own blocks and obstacles holding me back which, in all likelihood, will be there for the rest of my life.

Unfortunately there is no silver bullet or magic formula that will help you to think and be more creative. Instead, you have to constantly practice putting yourself in environments that enable creative impulses and thinking to grow. Here are some effective tools I have found that when used and practiced on a regular basis have helped me to be more creative. I believe they will be helpful to you as well.

Keep a Positive Attitude
To reinforce a creative attitude within you, begin by stating out loud this simple statement, “I am a creative person!” It is that simple. Say it over and over again. For the rest of this week make this one of the first things you say when you wake up in the morning and one of the last things you say before you go to bed. By affirming your own creative talents you will minimize your negative self-doubts and build a more positive mind-set. Research and experiments have proven that the mere suggestion that a person is an original thinker improves his or her creative abilities. Begin to think of yourself as more creative. Begin thinking of yourself as a creative person. If you think you are creative you are.

“Make your optimism come true.” Author Unknown

Take Time to Relax
This is not always an easy one to achieve in our hectic lives. Here is the thing. When you take the time to relax you are working within your own natural flow of creativity. A relaxed mind is an essential characteristic of a creative mind. Being physically tense or mentally uptight has a crippling effect on our natural creative talents. If you are trying to hard to solve a problem, in all reality you are moving farther away from identifying a solution. Creative ideas must be allowed to emerge naturally. They cannot be forced. Removing rigidness and moving into a mind-set of greater flexibility is an important piece to being more creative. To be more creative stay loose and let go of human based time constraints.

“Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.” Carl Sandberg

Suspend Judgment . . . at Least for a While
Ideas and creative thinking are very delicate. Just one criticism or negative thought can inhibit creative thinking. When you hear yourself say to someone, “That’s a good idea, but . . .” you are inhibiting his or her creativity and worse yet, your own. When you say to yourself or others, “That is no good or that will never work . . .” you are guilty of judging too soon. Try this instead. Give your imagination the “Green Light” and let the ideas flow. Later there will be plenty of time to judge and evaluate the ideas that have been created.

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality.” Albert Einstein

Open Your Doors of Perception
A creative attitude is a questioning and searching state of mind. Questioning is one of our great gifts and a basic foundation in the creative process. To be creative it is important to be sensitive to problems and their implications. While your judgment may be temporarily suspended, your analytical abilities are not. Creativity requires the ability to analyze problems and break them down into manageable components.

To achieve a stronger creative attitude, open up all of your senses. Strive for a state of heightened awareness which is more in tune with your natural abilities. This kind of fluid state of mind increases your perceptions making you sharper and more responsive. Plug into your senses and you will be able to maximize your creative powers.

“Originality is simply a fresh pair of eyes.” Woodrow Wilson
