The Greatest Gift

Sunday, December 14th, 2008

It seems like we spend a lot of our time shopping for Christmas gifts and preparing them for presentation to that special someone. There is less time actually spent with the people we have bought gifts for, and even less when those gifts are sent to someone far away and unwrapped when you are not even present.

“The only gift is a portion of thyself.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

What if there was a gift so special that you would not be able to find it in a mall, or in a boutique, and not even on the Internet? You would not have to shop away your hard earned money and time on things you or your gift recipients will not be using in six months anyway.

Inside of each one of us are tremendous gifts of talent and skill. The challenge is to consciously discover your special gifts and learn how to expand their capabilities and strength. I have found many of my gifts through interacting with people. When people continually and naturally act positively to the way I present, facilitate, or create, then I know that I am on the right track to more fully understanding my gifts.

I have also come to learn more about my gifts during down time. The time I take to visualize my ideas, rest on a couch, or walk in nature all give me time to see how to better grow and focus my energy on any particular gift I have. The challenge is that the more work I do the less time I have to go through these gift-building exercises. Even a few minutes here and there can make all the difference in the world.

“But it is a cold, lifeless business when you go to the shops to buy something, which does not represent your life and talent, but a goldsmith’s.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

When do people positively acknowledge you for your actions? What were you doing at the time? Could it be a gift waiting to be discovered?

Giving the gift of yourself and your time is quite possible the greatest gift one can ever give. The rewards on both sides are tremendous, going way beyond anything that could be bought. This does not mean that we don’t have to go out and purchase gifts, because in some cases we do, it’s all part of playing the game of life.

“A hug is a great gift – one size fits all, and it’s easy to exchange.” Author Unknown

Maybe this Christmas think a little different about the traditional gift giving we have come to know during the holidays. Instead, give the gift of yourself and your many talents to your family and friends. Just think of all the extra time you will have to spend with the ones you love and share your life with. Think of all the headaches and depression you will avoid. Think about all the money you will save this holiday season, maybe for a rainy day. And while you’re relaxing with friends knowing you are giving the ultimate gift, you can only hope that, one day, the rest of the world shopping their time away will wake up and catch the “giving of your gifts wave.”

Give it a try and see what happens for you and the person gifted.

“You give but little when you give of your possessions.  It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.” Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

The Art of Noodling

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

Over the Thanksgiving Holiday I did a little noodling around the lake for a nice change of pace. Noodling is always a good way for me to overcome my challenges and focus on what is most important in my life.

Noodling is a powerful creativity tool that supports me in bringing my thought processes into alignment with what it is that I really want to create in my life.

“The mark of a successful man is one that has spent an entire day on the bank of a river without feeling guilty about it.” Author Unknown

You aren’t thinking I am talking about the type of noodling that utilizes fingers and hands as bait in an effort to anger hidden and large catfish enough to bite down on these body parts so that I can catch one, were you?

Of course not. I am talking about the type of noodling that leverages your brain as a creativity tool to think up new ideas and reach those Eureka moments. Noodling for me is an ability to be still and think things through in a relaxed and unhurried way.

Our pace of life jams our senses and does not allow us to fully think through what we are doing and in most cases what it is we really want to create in our lives. You cannot force new and creative thoughts. You cannot force solutions. You cannot overcome that which is unresolved by forcing it. You can, on the other hand, overcome and resolve anything when you take the time to let your mind wander, relax and just be.

“It is only when we silent the blaring sounds of our daily existence that we can finally hear the whispers of truth that life reveals to us, as it stands knocking on the doorsteps of our hearts.” K.T. Jong

How often do you let your brain rest and just be besides the time when you are sleeping?

Noodling is not something new. Creative people from the beginning of time have been utilizing down time to relax the brain and think new thoughts. Noodling has been used by some of the greatest minds who ever lived and you can too.

Do you want to be as creative as Picasso? Do you want to think more like Einstein? Do you want to problem solve like Da Vinci? Do you desire to build businesses like Steve Jobs? Do you want to make a difference in people’s lives like Mother Theresa? Do you like the idea of becoming an actor like Harrison Ford? You can do anything you set your mind to if you are willing to put in the effort required and let your brain power work for your higher purpose.

The only difference between the people mentioned above and you is that they did not let their inner voice hold them back from meeting the challenges that they faced. They were willing to do the work necessary to move past these obstacles and create something more meaningful in their lives and those around them.

“It’s not who you are that holds you back, it’s who you think you’re not.” Author Unknown

Noodling is one of the common threads with all creative people. Noodling is a way to release the creativity within each one of us. It is also one of the most effective ways of solving and resolving challenges along lives journey. It is one of the most effective ways I have found to support me in turning my thinking into reality.

We are blessed to live on Grand Lake, a powerful place to noodle, as it has an endless number of places to get out into nature and just let your mind wander, be, and rest. Like so many things written in What Box? it takes patience, practice, and perseverance to let your mind learn “the art of noodling.”

You can do it! Go ahead and take a few minutes when you get the chance and find a quite place to let your mind wander. Take a walk in nature, find a quite place to sit and watch the snow fall, to take in the birds in flight, the dew drops sparkling in the sunlight, the water as it ripples towards the shoreline.

When you are relaxed attempt to just let your mind follow its own path. Here is the hard part: don’t allow your inner voice to judge what is being thought. Think outrageous thoughts, think new thoughts, think whatever thoughts come to you. They are your thoughts and when you are open to them who knows what you will think up.

“In response to those who say to stop dreaming and face reality, I say keep dreaming and make reality.” Kristian Kan, Rich By 25

There is nothing you cannot do or be. Noodling is one of the universal keys to unlocking a door to your creative potential which in turn will support you to align your thinking with what it is you want to create in your life.

Go ahead and noodle one of your days away. When you do you will tap into the creative genius of the ages.

Dear Sean
With all the changes going on, EVERYWHERE, I find it hard to know what to think about what tomorrow will bring in my life to say nothing of our country and the world. I don’t know how to begin to think about it all. Where can I start?
Thinking on Monkey Island

Dear Thinking,
The first thing to realize is that you cannot do anything about the future. The future is a dream that cannot be predicted no matter how hard you work to create it. All you can do is live and be in each and every moment of your life working each day towards the kind of life you desire. The challenge is to realize that you can impact your surroundings, that by being positive, engaged, and active you can impact the changes taking place in your part of the world. Here is the thing, the more things change the more things change. It is how we embrace and move through these changes that make all the difference. Remember to breathe and stay positive, you can do it.
Keep on keeping on,
Sean

Giving Away Your Love

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

You know, my favorite gift is the gift of love. How about you?

Love warms me. It makes me tingle all over, inspires me, causes me to blush, gives me confidence, comforts me, and inevitably brings my total attention to that exact moment of wonder.

“Love has no desire but to fulfill itself.  To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.  To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving.” Kahlil Gibran

Love is such a powerful force in our lives. Love is what we desire the most and in many cases is what we receive the least of.

It is not hard to understand why, as humans, giving and receiving love is not one of our major focuses. This is the deal, love does not cost us any monetary resources and yet has the power to give and receive more than all of Fort Knox worth of returns.

“Let your love be like the misty rains, coming softly, but flooding the river.”

Malagasy Proverb

What holds us back from giving and receiving love on a regular basis?

One of my favorite ways to express my love for those people in my life is through hugging. I know your thinking right now, oh great a hug, isn’t that a bit girly for a man?

Whenever I feel a strong unconditional kind of love for someone I just can’t help myself, I have to hug them. This has gotten me into way more uncomfortable situations than one can count. The thing is that it is a very natural way for me to express love for people in my life.

Over time the people that I have shared this unconditional love with start to feel the love and will actually wonder why I am not hugging them whenever I see them and don’t hug them. Got to love that.

The pace of our lives is such that we don’t allow ourselves the time to slow it down and feel the love, much less share it.

“A bell is no bell ’til you ring it,
A song is no song ’til you sing it,
And love in your heart
wasn’t put there to stay. Love isn’t love
’til you give it away.”

Oscar Hammerstein, The Sound of Music

Nothing could be more important in your live than to share your love and give it away. You can do it!

Have any of you read about people giving away “free hugs” to anyone walking down the street. Their idea is that everyone could use a little love and hey, it doesn’t cost anything. What a great example of people wanting to give people the power of love and to complete strangers. You don’t have to be so extreme share your love.

This Thanksgiving muster the energy and intention of giving away your love to those you care about. Nothing could be more important or rewarding.

“Love is, above all, the gift of oneself.” Jean Anouilh

Embracing Change

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Embracing change is one of the greatest challenges we face as humans. Change is accelerating at an ever increasing pace and if we do not learn to embrace, or at a minimum accept, the changes taking place globally we will in all likelihood wake up one day and say to ourselves, “Was I sleeping? How did we get so far behind?”

Many of us are so caught up in our own lives that we are blinded by the realities of what is taking place outside our daily activities. We get so focused on ourselves that we lose sight of the bigger picture. Because of this self-centered focus many of us are unable to see the changes going on outside ourselves, changes that can have direct or indirect influence on our lives.

Nothing stays the same and if we are going to be a relevant as a community we need to collectively wake up to our changing world and figure out how we can be a part of these changes.

Our challenge is not to forget how we got to where we are and remember that to be relevant we must continually reinvent ourselves. We cannot live life in a bubble thinking that we can remain the same.

“When we are no longer able to change a situation, we are challenged to change ourselves.” Victor Frankl

When we think outside-of-the-box and look beyond what we know learning takes place and we increase our chances of being relevant players in our increasingly changing world.

Instant gratification is a growing phenomenon and it is preventing us from seeing how we contribute to a positive or negative future for the generations ahead.

Now more than ever the world needs for us to take a “long view,” a view that allows us to look toward the kind of future we want to create for our descendants. The decisions we are making today have the ability to create a positive impact on the future or our decisions have the ability to have a potentially negative impact.

When you allow your mind to imagine future scenarios as they connect to past events and current activities you will start to link and form new ideas and creative and innovative scenarios.

“Continuity gives us roots; change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new heights.” Pauline R. Kezer

Today we need to be thinking about the future we are creating. This means that we will have to take calculated risks, think beyond our comfort zone, out-of-the-box, and collaborate with others.

With the pace of change accelerating and the desire for instant gratification growing, it becomes imperative to think out ahead into the future so we can make the best decisions today, decisions that will have a positive impact on the future.

When you are open to letting your imagination wander, enabling connections to be made, new and powerful solutions become possible.

We need to get serious about expanding and exercising our creativity as individuals and a nation. This means thinking differently about how we go about interacting, relating, and doing business with the world and ourselves.

“They must often change, who would be constant in happiness or wisdom.” Confucius

Let me know what you think.

Focusing on Possiblity

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Now is the time to shift our thinking from “I can’t possibly make a difference,” to “I will be one of the people who will focus my energies on working purely and simply for the benefit of humankind so that we can change the course of history and move to a place of love and compassion for our community, city, state, nation, and the world.”

“The purpose of life is not to be happy – but to matter, to be productive, to be useful, to have it make some difference that you have lived at all.” Leo Rosten

Keeping the mind and heart focused on the possibility of what “can be” while remaining positive today can be a major uphill battle.

When the world gets me down, when the words of wise men and women drive a dagger in my heart, and when the actions of our leaders work for the few and not the whole, I do my best to look for the possibility of what “can be” and focus on the positive.

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” Anne Frank

What you think about and imagine the most will be what you create in your life. When you think about and imagine what seems to be an impossible idea on a regular basis, you will have embarked on “the impossible dreaming journey,” and you will be one step closer to making the impossible, possible.

Dreaming what you perceive as impossible thoughts or dreams can lead you through new doors of perception and opportunity. It is important to remain open to different and unexpected thinking when embarking on the “impossible dreaming journey.”

It is only when we start to think and believe that our thoughts and dreams are not impossible, that they can become real, that they can become possible.

We are the only ones that can influence the changes necessary to turn the tide and redirect the flow of hope and compassion back into our reservoir, and to fill our hearts and those of the citizens of the world with the possibility of changing the course of history for the betterment of all.

“Act as if what you do makes a difference.  It does.” William James

Our challenge is to focus on the possibility of what “can be” while remaining positive through the challenges of change.

Electing Out-of-the-Box Thinkers

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

When you think about out-of-the-box people, who do you think of? Richard Branson, Picasso, Salvador Dali, Chuck Barris, Frida Khalo, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington or, possibly Paul Revere.

People who think out-of-the-box see and open new possibilities. In many cases these are the leaders who challenge us and inspire us to think differently and rise up into action. It is hard to think of a more out-of-the-box bunch than America’s founding fathers. Let’s face it. They had to be to think they could take on England, the most powerful nation on earth in 1776. In our founding fathers’ day their out-of-the-box thinking revolved around a nation based upon liberty, justice, free speech, all men are created equal, the separation of church and state, the right to participate in the religion of your choice, the right to bear arms, and the ability to participate in deciding who represents you in our government. The idea of voting for who you want representing you is quite possibly one of our founding fathers greatest legacies.

Benjamin Franklin is one of the greatest examples of an out-of-the-box thinker I can think of. As an entrepreneur, author, inventor, publisher, philosopher, Casanova, and diplomat, Franklin was able to enroll France to support the founding fathers with much needed money and resources. This was no small task as no country wanted to get embroiled in the controversy of supporting an unrecognized band of out-of-the-box thinkers, fighting England, in an unchartered far away place.

Thomas Jefferson acted as architect of one of the most important vision and mission documents in the history of man, the Declaration of Independence.

George Washington risked it all to fight for freedom and liberty and then stepped up to the plate to become our newly born nation’s first President.

Their out-of-the-box thinking and risk taking has inspired and moved our nation for over 232 years. And much like England during the time of America’s birth, we became the most powerful nation on earth.

I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us, that the less we use our power the greater it will be.” Thomas Jefferson

I wonder what Ben Franklin would have to say about where we find our great nation at this point in history?

“Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both.” Benjamin Franklin

As we look out over the landscape of our world today, we find ourselves at a crossroads in history. America has an opportunity to lead the world and show what is possible by uniting and leading by example. America is not its President, its Senators, its Congressmen, or its special interest groups. America is its citizens. We the people are able to choose who we want representing us by going out and voting.

How can we regain the “out-of-the-box” thinking that inspired the birth of our nation? Now more than ever we need to reach down deep and pull out the best we can be to take on the challenges of today and tomorrow. Why is it that we need to be hit by lightening bolts to wake up and face reality? Then after being awakened, over time, we have a tendency to get complacent, forget, and go back to our old patterns of living.

We cannot afford to fall back into our old patterns. We need to support new thinking from both our major political parties and all of the candidates. We can support new thinking by understanding the issues, where our candidates stand, and letting our voices be heard by voting.

“For having lived long, I have experienced many instances of being obliged, by better information or fuller consideration, to change opinions, even on important subjects, which I once thought right, but found to be otherwise.” Benjamin Franklin

You have the power to influence the next chapter of our great country and the world by voting for the best candidate to represent all of us. It is critical that we understand all of the candidates’ merits, faults, strengths, weaknesses, and vision for our future. This understanding will enable you to make the best possible decision when you go to the polls to vote.

As part of Ben Franklin’s legacy he has left us a powerful tool to support our ability to make informed decisions, the Pro-Con Chart, a thinking and decision making tool that is as viable today as it was when he was using it over 200 years ago. In fact, this is the same exercise Kristen and I used when we were making our big decision to move, or not to move, to Grand Lake way back when. Ben liked to use a Pro-Con Chart when the decisions he had to make were some of the most important he was about to make.

Here is how it works. At the top of a piece of paper put the candidates name centered on 1/2 the page then draw a line under each name. From the center of the paper draw a line down just under the name so you have two equal spaces to your left and right. At the top of the left under the name and line put the word Pro. On the right side under the name and line put the word Con. Then write down all the Pro and Con concepts you can come up with on why you would vote or not vote for this candidate. Next to each Pro and Con concept place a number from 1 –10, “10” being the most important and “1” being the least. Take your time and be realistic about your number rating. After attaching a number to each concept, add up the numbers on each side and total. These thoughts and figures will help you better understand your deeper thinking.

Put your candidate and their opponent to the Ben Franklin Pro-Con test! See if you are making the best choice you can be making.

I think that Ben would be proud. See you at the polling booths on November 4th.

Let me know what you think.

Until next week, remember that the only boxes that exist are the ones you create for yourself.

Realizing Your Dreams

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Each and every moment in your life is extremely precious. Each moment represents unlimited potential for creating the life you have always dreamed of, the life you were meant to be living, the life that fulfills your purpose on this planet.

If you are one of the few people that has figured this out, congratulations. If you are among the many who continue to think that there is something more to life than just going through the motions, then now is the time to start working towards living your life’s purpose. What are you waiting for?

What is your dream? What is it that you most desire but don’t currently have in you life? What is it that you are meant to be doing with your life?

“Nothing happens unless first a dream.” Carl Sandberg

None of these are easy questions to answer, but once you ask them you will begin the process of opening the doors of perception and begin to naturally move towards reaching your full potential.

I know that for some of us it is just too hard to even start the process of thinking about how to achieve what it is that we dream of for our lives. It is just easier not to think about it. Finding the answers to these questions might mean that we have to change what we are currently doing, change who we live with , change our careers or even move to another location. These are just a few of the reasons why so many people settle and never take the powerful steps needed to reach for something more in their lives in order to discover what the purpose of their life really is.

“To change one’s life: Start immediately. Do it flamboyantly. No exceptions.” William James

Even if we want to change we can get stuck in a rut. Like a broken record we continue to do what we have always done because it’s more comfortable, like our favorite pair of old worn jeans. At some point you have to make the change and throw those jeans away or find a new use for them. You need to change elements of your life every once in a while otherwise you will start to get tired, worn out, and bored. This leads to complacency and a mental plaque that prevents you from seeing the opportunities around you. You are unique, you are special, you have a purpose in life and it is important to you and the world that you pursue your purpose in life and live it.

What are you waiting for?

You can start by writing down everything you have dreamed about what your life could be. Write down all that comes to you as fast as you can. Don’t think about how whacked out your dreams may be. Don’t stop and think, “This is just too much for anyone to think is real.” Don’t worry at all about what it is you are writing down. Just do it! You can do it!

“We grow great by dreams. All big men are dreamers. They see things in the soft haze of a spring day or in the red fire of a long winter’s evening. Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; they nurse them thought bad day until they bring them to the sunshine and the light that always comes to those who sincerely hope that there dreams will come true.”Woodrow Wilson

After you have written down your dreams, even if just one, post them on the mirror in your bathroom. Look at them each morning. Think about what it would be like if your dreams became real. How would you feel?

The next step is to write down what you need to do to make your dreams real. Start taking these steps. It may take weeks. It may take months. It may take years. It may take a lifetime. It doesn’t matter because you are living your dreams and nothing could be more important.

“Allow yourself to dream and fantasize about your ideal life; what it would look like, and what it would feel like. Then do something everyday to make it a reality.” Brian Tracy

What are you waiting for?

In my life I work everyday to live my dreams and my life’s purpose. The more I work at this the easier it becomes. Really. I will say this. Your life will never be the same once you embark on this process because you will enter into the great unknown and the world will open up for you. You will start meeting people who are aligned with your dreams and will want to help you. You will start to experience new challenges that will stretch you, enabling you to grow. You will start going with the flow of life. You will start living your purpose. What could be more important?

If you desire to live your life with greater meaning and purpose there is no time like the present to start. You can do it!

“If one advances confidently in the direction of his own dreams and endeavors to live the life that he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.” Henry David Thoreau

What are you waiting for?

Let me know what you think.

Think!

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

How often do you think about what a phenomenal gift your mind is? Just how phenomenal is it? Your mind thinks and moves energy at the speed of light. Not impressed? Think about it just for a second. Your mind moves energy and ideas at the speed of light. Still not impressed? Let’s put it in perspective. In one second, moving at the speed of light you can travel around the world seven and a half times. Now that’s impressive! What’s even more impressive is that your mind thinks and moves energy at that same speed.

Like computers we only use about 10% of the capacity of our brain. Some of us might push the envelope and use 15% but that is about it. Think of the unlimited potential we are letting sit idle. It is time to stop the brain drain and start using more of our minds abilities. Each of us has over 1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion) brain cells and a virtual Niagara Falls of bio-chemical information flowing through it.

Yet what do we fill our minds with? In so many cases we fill it with junk. We worry about things that never happen. We over think everything, one of my personal favorites. We think about what we are going to eat. We think about issues of money. We think about trivial facts that don’t do much for us at all. We think about the tasks we have ahead of us or worse all the things we needed to do but did not get done, which leads us to start stressing out. The list of things we pre-occupy our minds with goes on and on and on and on . . .

“Too often we… enjoy the comfort of opinion without the discomfort of thought.” John F. Kennedy

In so many cases we don’t even know we are doing this because it is such a natural part of our daily, weekly, monthly and yearly thinking activities. When you take the time to slow down, calm the mind, and relax, this is when you can begin to take a look at what your mind is doing. Only then can you start to understand how much of your brain power is being used up by things that really don’t matter and in many cases are a detriment to your mental and physical health.

Like so many things written about and discussed in What Box? this is not easy stuff. If it were easy everyone would be using more of their minds potential. I have been working on improving my ability to use more of brain consciously for over 15 years now and I am still a long ways away from getting to where I know I can. The key is to keep on keeping on. Persevere no matter how difficult and you will find yourself becoming more aware of what you are thinking about, what you put into your mind and how you use your mind.

“You and I are not what we eat; we are what we think.” Walter Anderson

When you program your mind with junk you create junk in your life. If you think you can, you can, if you think you can’t, you can’t. It is a universal law. This is a small example of how powerful your mind is.

Now you may say, “All right Sean, I am interested in taking a look at what is on my mind. How do I do this?”

One of the first and most important ways is to find a place of silence. I have found nature to be the greatest place to quiet the mind. It is a place to find the inner peace that will allow you see what your mind is doing. Breath slowly, become conscious of what you are thinking about. Let your thoughts flow without judgment. After a while begin to think about what you are thinking about. How does it make you feel? Are they positive thoughts? Are they negative thoughts? Are they thoughts that have nothing do with anything and are a total waste of your brain power? Or are they productive thoughts? Thoughts about how to create positive change in your life? Are they thoughts about supporting a better life for yourself and others? Are they thoughts about looking at yourself and how to improve who you are?

“Begin challenging your own assumptions.  Your assumptions are your windows on the world.  Scrub them off every once in awhile, or the light won’t come in.” Alan Alda

The goal is to focus your mind on the productive and positive thoughts. These kinds of thoughts will produce the productive and positive results you desire in your life. It may not happen in a week, it may not happen in a year. It will happen. Behind every overnight success is 20 years of hard work, persistence and positive, productive thinking.

One thing is for sure. The more you practice seeing what is on your mind and using your minds pathways for productive and positive thought the more efficient your thinking will become and the more positivity will be created in your life. Give it a try. It is never too late to start becoming more aware of yourself. When you do, a whole new world will open to you, a world of unlimited potential and wonder.

Go for it! What are you waiting for?

Let me know what you think.

Believing in Possibility

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

It is only when we start to think and believe that our thoughts and dreams are not impossible, that they can become real.

Few really believe.  The most only believe that they believe or even make believe.”  John Lancaster Spalding

What you think about and imagine the most will be what you create in your life. When you think about and imagine what seems to be and impossible idea on a regular basis, you will have embarked on “the impossible dreaming journey,” and you will be one step closer to making the impossible, possible.

“Some things have to be believed to be seen.” Ralph Hodgson

Thomas A. Edison, Michelangelo, and Abraham Lincoln marched to their own beat and believing in the possibility of the impossible. They showcased for us the power of change we have hidden deep inside ourselves. They demonstrated what is possible.

Confidence is a very key part in developing your creativity. If you have confidence in your creativity you will indeed become more creative.

Having confidence in yourself is being open and willing to go further in exploring other possibilities. Arrogance is being closed and defensiveness when other ideas are presented. Very creative people are rarely arrogant.

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t – you are right.” Henry Ford

The process of exploring the impossible as possible allows new What Box? ideas to rise to the surface. The challenge is to let the ideas flow and not block them with limited boxed thinking. Focus on making it possible and see what happens in your life.

Let me know what you think.

Breaking Out-of-Your-Box

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

More and more of us are being defined by the limiting parameters we set for ourselves, what is commonly know as “a box.” Our challenge as humans is to figure our how to “break-out-of-the-box” that supports creating the limitations in our lives, the box that holds us back as individuals, communities, and countries.

Breaking-out-of-the-box is about stretching your limits and facing those things that hold you back.

Our patterns of judgment–fear, not being good enough, and control–are only a few of the pieces that make up the box we create around ourselves.

If we sit back for a few seconds and think about the idea of a box, we might see that some of the greatest discoveries in history have been uncovered by individuals willing to take a risk and think outside-of-the-box.

To break-out-of-the-box we need to be open to change, to be willing to look at the boxes that we create for ourselves, and then be willing to face them head on. Once we face them we need to take action to move out-of-the box, which means doing what we have not wanted to do in the past.

Everyday is an opportunity to use your creativity, imagination, teamwork, positivity, logic, and passion which, when engaged, will enable you to increase your ability to live a life with more purpose and meaning.

Reclaiming your childhood vision is one of the best ways to start breaking out-of-the-box. In so many cases we have forgotten how to play, imagine, and even worse we have forgotten how to be ourselves.

Thinking with childlike vision is hard work and takes courage. In many cases it means you may have to sacrifice long held beliefs, paradigms, to gain new perspective.

Take the risk to step out on a limb and to be different than others and to challenge your thinking and your beliefs. This will enable you to “break-out-of-your-brainwashed box” into “out-of-the-box-thinking!”

Breaking-out-of-the-box takes practice, patience, constant attention, and a deep desire to be the best you can be. You can do it!

Let me know what you think.

Until next week, remember the only boxes that exist are the ones you create yourself.
